Witness to History: Vignettes of the American Revolution
The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History presents a captivating collection of original documents from the Revolutionary War that feature untold stories of everyday life. Bookended by a 1776 copy of the Declaration of Independence and King George III's 1783 proclamation ending the war, the artifacts include a letter describing the panic in New York City as British troops entered; the first American treaty with the Cherokee; and a document certifying that Cuffee Wells, an enslaved man, doctor, and Continental soldier had received an enlistment bounty that purchased his freedom.
